Review: Garden Tuscany (Moonee Ponds)

I’ve been meaning to get to Garden Tuscany ever since I got an email from them when they first opened. Which was….awhile ago. But since I’ve been on a training rampage for about 18 months now, I no longer have my regular Saturday paper and breaky in the ponds, we usual grab coffee and breaky after our ride.

Anyway today the planets aligned, I got home and was pretty hungry still so asked the man out for lunch. He loves wood fired pizza so managed to lure him there by mentioning how they have their own oven and that they sound amazing. I’ve been talking to the owner (or who I presume is the owner) on twitter a bit, but I got a bit shy today and felt like too much of a dork to say “are you the twitter lady”…

We ordered two pizzas, the prosciutto (napoli, mozzarella, prosciutto, rocket and olives) and the salsiccia (napoli, gourmet sausage, fior di latte cheese, capsicum and oregano). I also ordered my usual skinny latte as the barista Lance has just been rated 3 beans on the Melbourne Coffee Review.

Lance was lovely, as they don’t take EFTPOS, he pointed me in the direction of the bank (down an alley that even as a moonee ponds local I didn’t know existed) and waited until I got back to make my coffee! Great service. The pizzas arrived super quick and were delicious. The man was initially concerned the bases would be too thick and bread like for him, but they were quite good. Just the right amount of crispness for him to be able to eat it! Phew! They were the perfect size for lunch, I let him eat my last slice so I’d have room for dessert. And another coffee because the first one was great.

The coffee was fantastic! It wasn’t too strong, it didn’t taste burnt and considering I asked for a skinny latte (which can have disastrous results if they use dodgy skim milk) I was super impressed.

The man noted that I once again have a nice place to go in Moonee Ponds for a coffee!

Unfortunately the man didn’t want to have any dessert, which was a pity has I had my eye on a dessert share plate which had churros, handmade chocolates and some chocolate mousse. Too full to tackle on my own I chose the pizzelle (italian wafer biscuit) and one of the cocoa covered handmade dark chocolates. They forgot to bring my chocolate but I ended up scoring TWO so I was super happy. They really were wonderful with the coffee.

I’m in Moonee Ponds for work three days next week and will be taking my team there for coffee for sure! I am stoked to have a new ‘place’ with great coffee…hopefully I will be less shy and be able to introduce myself! I’ll chalk this up to an ‘undercover review’. At least I know the service is unreal, even when they don’t know you!

Also, the setting is amazing – really nice sitting in the covered courtyard/backyard watching the pizzas and calzones being made. Looked to be kid friendly too. Anthony Malloy I highly recommend you get over here and check it out!
