Don’t stop rockin’ now no way – SOTM February 2011

I was sure I had already done this months SOTM previously…surely…surely I had!! But no.

I predicted this song would get #1 in triple j’s hottest 100, and came SO CLOSE. I thought I was a musical genius, but no. Bloody Angus and Julia Stone (sorry Carly) had to come and trump Little Red’s ‘Rock It’, and I was put right back in my box. Still #2 out of 100 isn’t bad!

I love the song, its catchy, gets stuck in your head AND I like the lyrics. It reminds me of going out on uni night (…er more than 5 YEARS AGO):

“C’mon, DJ play us one more song
We’ve been waiting all night long
Just about to lose our minds
So play that rhythm one more time
And now they’re clearing out the floor
We never made it there at all
Still not ready to go home
But no-one knows which way to go

Rock it to the break of day
Don’t stop rocking now, no way
If everybody feels the same
This is why we play these games
Rock it to the early dawn
Soon those good times will be gone
Everything I ever had, if I could have
One night like that”.

Here it is: Little Red’s “Rock it”

Seven worlds will collide – SOTM January 2011

Don’t fret – I’m doing a catch up of my SOTMs but here is January’s:

Chris Cheney of the Living End doing a cover of Distant Sun by Crowded House. Not bad at all. You can download the full version from itunes. The album is called ‘He will have his way’ which is male Australian artists covering Neil and Tim Finn songs. There is also a ‘She will have her way’ which is the opposite. There are some gorgeous covers on the albums – Paul Kelly and Angus Stone doing Four Seasons in One Day and Clare Bowditch doing Message To My Girl are stand outs, as of course is this months. I do really love the Clare Bowditch track, but Distant Sun is one of my favourite Crowded House songs.

I’m on my feet, I’m on the floor, I’m good to go – SOTM December 2010

This months SOTM is courtesy of my sister, it’s ‘A Praise Chorus’ by Jimmy Eat World. This song was their ‘day song’ on the Contiki trip she did over Christmas. I quite like Jimmy Eat World, I like this song as its catchy and reminds me of music I used to listen to about 6 or 7 years ago.

Fun Jentopia fact: I crowd surfed to ‘The Sweetness’ by Jimmy Eat World at the Big Day out in 2003. It was also the first and only time I’ve seen the Foo Fighters live and it was AWESOME!

Fond of Y-O-U – SOTM September 2010

I know, I’ve been slack on the posting AND even on the SOTM. Never fear. I’m still alive and still listening to music.

This month’s (well September’s) is Turn on me by The Shins. Enjoy.

You are a radar detector – SOTM July 2010

I stumbled across this SOTM in a shop a few weeks ago. I thought it was pretty catchy so I used the shazam app for the first time. Thats the app where you hear a song and it listens to it and tells you the name of the song and the artist. Pretty clever! The song is ‘Radar Detector’ by Darwin Deez.  Only trouble is that its a bit of an earworm and now I can’t get it out of my head.

Also the video is really cool. Who is off to make vampire fangs using a plastic fork?

It’s t-shirt weather! – SOTM June 2010

It’s definitely not t-shirt weather, but I’ve fallen in love with this song. When I first started listening to the Lucksmiths I looked at their most popular song on itunes and this was it. I didn’t really like the sound of it so never bought it, until the other day when I’d exhausted my Lucksmiths stash. I bought it and….I love it!

As I’ve mentioned before I’m slightly devastated that they broke up in August 2009. It was only a couple of months later I stumbled across them.  Apparently there is a DVD of their last show coming out. Will definitely be getting my paws on that!

Anyway, here is ‘t-shirt weather’ filmed by some awesome person in their last show at The Corner Hotel. There are other versions on youtube, some with better quality but I thought a gig in Australia was nicer!

It’s not the whole song, you miss a nice riff at the beginning but you get the gist of it.

Look outside at the raincoats coming say oh – SOTM May 2010

Never fear people I have another two actual posts in the pipeline, one I’ve been working on for a week or so. Don’t expect it to be good for the time its taken, its been a stop-start job.

Anyway SOTM this month was ridiculously easy after hearing Vampire Weekend’s catchy tune A-Punk. You can see it playing below. Very very catchy. I’ve had a look through their other stuff and besides ‘Oxford Comma’ (which I’d heard already) nothing else grabs me. Am I missing a top Vampire Weekend song? If so, hook me up!

I won’t back down – SOTM April 2010

I’ll be honest I couldn’t find a new song I liked so I thought why not go retro for this months SOTM? Then I had to choose between Peter Blakely’s ‘Crying in the Chapel’ or this song, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with ‘Won’t Back Down’.

It’s obvious what I chose. Enjoy
